OLAPObjects Journal Entry

OlapObjects Journal Entry is a web application that leverages OLAPObjects for TM1 to provide an easy to use, controlled, and auditable way of posting DR/CR adjustments to Applix TM1 cubes through a web browser interface.

Key features

Easy set up of any TM1 cube to accept journals One or more TM1 cubes can be configured to accept journal entries. Configuration is managed over the web through the Internet Explorer browser.
The journal entry module can be configured with specific settings, for example whether your base time elements are year to date values or monthly values, and whether credits should be shown as positive or negative values. These settings are controlled by the administrator.
Built-in controls There are built-in controls to ensure that journal entries cannot be posted until they are balanced, i.e. total debits must equal total credits.
Intuitive, web based interface Configuration as well as the posting of journal entries takes place purely over the web, in Internet Explorer.
User defined journal span Entries can only be posted to entities that the administrator has granted access to. The administrator has further control in that s/he determines which TM1 cubes in the TM1 database can receive journal entries, and which dimensions within those cubes the entries can be posted to.
A typical scenario is where journal entries can only be posted within a division, time period and version (i.e. actual, budget, forecast etc.), while for a company that reports by cost center, that dimension too may be configured to accept journal entries.
Full support for recurring and reversing journals Journals can be grouped and easily retrieved for future reuse, to save time and re-keying. Journals can also be easily retrieved for reversal if necessary.
Journals may be posted individually or as a batch One or more journals may be entered for posting at one time. Once posted, the effect of the journal entry is visible immediately in TM1.
An audit trail maintained in any ODBC SQL database An audit trail of every journal transaction is recorded in an ODBC compliant database of your choice. Out of the box a Microsoft Access database is provided for this purpose, but it can easily be configured to write to any ODBC compliant relational database including Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle and DB/2.
Standard journal entry reports included The system includes a set of standard journal entry reports.
Custom journal reporting Custom journal reporting can be done against the relational database record, using any relational report writer including Crystal Reports.
Ability to export journal entries to general ledger systems The system can be configured to extract journals in any text format for posting to most popular general ledger systems.
Exploits full TM1 security The posting of journals is fully subject to TM1 security.

OLAPObjects Automated Eliminations

Inter-company eliminations must be applied so that meaningful consolidations are calculated, no matter where in the organizational hierarchy it is viewed from.

Thinking of the organizational hierarchy as a tree-like structure, elimination companies are set up at each fork in the branch to net out eliminations up to that point. When viewed from the top of the hierarchy, representing the entire organization, all inter-company transactions will have been eliminated, giving a true consolidated picture of the financial results.

With the OLAPObjects Automated Eliminations module this structure can be easily configured, and the process of calculating eliminations can be initiated from a web page, but only by a person with the appropriate security. As soon as eliminations have been calculated, their effects are visible at every level in the organizational structure, as well as at the top consolidated level – once again leveraging iTM1’s powerful on-the-fly consolidation and calculation capability.

Since Journals are created in OLAPObjects Journal Entry, these entries can be reported along with any other journals posted by the Journal Entry module.

OLAPObjects Data Pipeline

Do you have business units around the world using their own financial software and chart of accounts, that need to submit monthly data to your corporate office for consolidation in TM1?

OLAPObjects Data Pipeline is a utility for uploading data into a TM1 database over a secure web page on an intranet or the internet. The data that is uploaded resides in a batch file. This upload file is usually created by taking a flat file extract from a financial software system, and then transforming it into a TM1-friendly XML format using an Excel workbook which is also part of the utility. Organizations that do financial consolidations in TM1 will benefit from using OLAPObjects Data Pipeline if:

Using the OLAPObjects Data Pipeline module is a simple four step process, all carried out at the remote location:

  1. Create a flat file extract from the source software system at the remote location.
  2. At the remote location, use the format of one record in the flat file extract to build up the mapping and transformation logic in the OLAPObjects Data Pipeline Excel workbook which is provided.
Detailed instructions are provided in the workbook itself. Mostly the person configuring the workbook will be using Excel formulas to design the transformations, as well as entering mapping tables.
This step will usually only be done once. Once this workbook has been configured, very little (if any) effort is required to maintain it.
  3. Press the Process File in the OLAPObjects Data Pipeline Excel workbook to select the flat file extract, and convert it to an XML upload file using the information that was configured in the previous step.
  4. Go to the secure OLAPObjects Data Pipeline web page and click on the Upload button. Select the XML file that was created in the previous step. The file is then processed directly into TM1 over the web.
